Joanna Hemingway

I am an integrative child & adolescent psychotherapist.

I offer individual psychotherapy to children, adolescents and young adults presenting with a range of difficulties.

I also provide parent work sessions to help parents or carers gain a deeper understanding of what might be going for their child.

The core of my approach is establishing a safe, trusting relationship in which I work collaboratively with young people and families to make sense of things that are causing difficulty.

I draw on psychodynamic, relational and systemic perspectives, helping young people explore underlying feelings and relational experiences as well as considering the influence of family dynamics and their social environment. I also use the arts, including sandtray, clay, paints and movement to enable young people think about things that may be difficult to articulate with words. My focus through the therapeutic process is enabling young people and families to find ways of thinking, acting and relating for themselves that fosters resilience and empowers young people to reach their potential.

An important aspect of my work with children and adolescents is working with parents to help them support their child. I also have experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team around children and families.

I worked as a child bereavement counsellor for a children’s charity supporting children through individual and group sessions and as a child mentor prior to training as a psychotherapist.
